International Meeting of Cistercian Laics

The monastery of Our Lady of Huerta is a community of Cistercian monks of the Strict Observance OCSO who follow the Rule of Saint Benedict, written in the 6th century. The Cistercian Order was founded in 1098.

Our Lady of Huerta has a long history, with its origin going back to 1150. Its art and architecture, accumulated down through the centuries, expresses the life of the Spirit that has shaped its existence. Prayer and work, inner solitude and community life, a silence that listens and a word of welcome, separation and solidarity with the world, especially the poor, are the characteristics of the community’s way of life, which seeks not to separate the human from the divine.

At present, the community of Our Lady of Huerta number approximately twenty monks. It has erected a new foundation, Our Lady of Mount Sion, on the outskirts of Toledo. This community’s life has also born fruit in a lay community that has grown up around the monastery and which, while living in ‘the world’, hopes to share in the Cistercian charisma.
