WHO WE ARE AND OUR BEGINNINGS

We are a group of Christians, secular men and women, from different ages and backgrounds, willing to live in the world according to the evangelical message. We are based on the spirituality and Cistercian charisma, being in communion with the Monastery of Santa María of Huerta.

The Lay Cistercian Group was created in response to our interest in the Cistercian charisma, which we have experienced being in contact with this community.

The Monastic Life and Prayer formation courses have been carried out in the monastery since 1986. The growing motivation in some of the participants, through the desire of maintaining and increasing the spiritual ties with the community, made possible to hold the courses. These former participants, along with other supporters of the Cistercian charisma learnt in Santa María of Huerta, began to meet in September of 1996. They were invited by the Abbot of the Monastery who, in agreement with the letter that the Abbot General wrote in January of 1995, called them to participate in the Cistercian charisma with the community. The letter talked about the invitation that the Church made to the to share with the Lay Cistercians their own charisma.

OUR INTENTIONS

From our secular condition, we wish to share the Cistercian charisma with the Community of the Monastery of Santa  María of Huerta. We want to share with them the mutual spiritual benefits and the immersion into the world.

Each one of the members is calledto live the monastic dimension that every human being carries in its inner life, and the essential values of the Cistercian charisma according to its own condition:

    · Desire and search of God.

    · Purity and unity of heart.

    · A life of prayer, which allow us "to listen to God” through the meditation of His Word which, in turn, will lead us to Christ.

    · Simplicity and sobriety of life.

    · Humility.

    · Spirit of obedience.

Cultivating in our own life the "contemplative" spirit that comes out of unified and peaceful hearts, we are seeking to contemplate all and with all coming from God.  We do not wish to be apart from the world but understand and be part of it. Thus, we could join with all beings in a way that we all become unified and united to God.
